Natural de Caetés (PE) e com trajetória profissional iniciada na metalurgia, consolidou sua liderança política no PT, exercendo a presidência do Brasil por dois mandatos consecutivos entre 2003 e 2010. Sua biografia recente enfrentou um período de judicialização acentuada em 2018, quando foi preso, condenado e impedido de concorrer sob a Lei da Ficha Limpa, cenário revertido em 2021 após o Supremo Tribunal Federal anular suas condenações. Com a subsequente prescrição e arquivamento dos processos da Lava Jato (não houve sentença judicial absolutória), ele recuperou a elegibilidade, retornando ao Palácio do Planalto em 2023 após derrotar o então presidente Jair Bolsonaro em uma disputa polarizada., iniciando o seu terceiro mandato presidencial.
